Note

On 8 March 1892 Tobias swore before DUGAS, clerk of the 20th Judicial District Court in and for Assumption Parish that he was born in Bavaria, Germany in 1831 and came to New Orleans, the United State s, in 1850.

He renounced allegience to William II, Emperor of Germany. In 1831 the King of Bavaria was Louis I Agustus. In 1892 William II, a Prussian, was the third Kaiser of the combined Germany. Tobias's signa ture is in German script. This document conflicts with the steerage manifest of the Ship Carrack which arrived in New Orleans.

This document has the date of 16 June 1851 and a notation June-Nov. The Carrack may have sailed in June and arrived in November. On this manifest Tobias OHMER, age 17, is listed as #196 on a list of 3 07. He is listed as an farmer. The ship is said to have left from Le Harve, France. The manifest has a column for place of Nativity with three designations; France, Baden and Bavaria. Boundries are di fficult during and following the Napoleonic wars. Tobias was probably from the Pfalz which was part of the Kingdom of Bavaria until 1871.

He was buried 25 April 1899 at Attakapas, Louisiana. Since Tobias is the progenitor of all Louisiana OHMERs, any connection to the German or French can probably only be found by further research in th e records in the Pfalz or Baden. Marriage dates may be either the date the license was received or the actual date of the event. The spelling of names is determined by the person recording the data. S ee the record of his son Edouard Octave where the couple referred to as Tobie OHMER and Jeanette LACOSTA.
